Nickel laterites cannot be easily treated since the nickel is finely disseminated throughout the ore. Therefore, very expensive leaching and smelting processes are required to process nickel laterite ore. The incentive for the present research was to develop a new carbothermic reduction process for nickel laterite ore that would produce a higher grade of nickel than current industrial techniques.
May 12, 2008· A process is described for the recovery of nickel and/or cobalt from laterite or partially oxidized lateritic ores having a substantial proportion of the iron present in the ferrous state. The process includes providing a laterite or partially oxidized laterite ore wherein a substantial proportion of the iron present in the ore is in the ferrous state; acid leaching the ore to provide a ...
Nickelcobalt (NiCo) laterite deposits are supergene enrichments of Ni±Co that form from intense chemical and mechanical weathering of ultramafic parent rocks. These regolith deposits typically form within 26 degrees of the equator, although there are a few exceptions. They form in active continental margins and stable cratonic settings.
Typical nickel laterite ore deposits are very large tonnage, lowgrade deposits located close to the surface, they are typically in the range of 20 million tonnes and upwards (this being a contained resource of 200,000 tonnes of nickel at 1%) with some examples approaching a billion tonnes of material.
QNI's nickel had initially built the acid leaching plant at Moa Bay, and cobalt refinery processes million tpa of lateritic Krause et al. (1997). One acidpressureleaching plant is nickel ore, based on the Caron process, Anthony and currently in existence at Moa Bay. Concentrated sul Flett (1997).
Reduction roasting and magnetic separation experiments illustrate that when the nickel laterite ore with the addition of 7% NCS as the additive and 2% soft coal as the reductant roasts for 50 min at 1200°C, the ferronickel product obtained from magnetic separation has the nickel grade of % with the nickel recovery of %, and the recovery difference of nickel and iron is %.
Pressure acid leaching is an acceptable process for the treatment of nickel laterites. This process offers many advantages such as low energy consumption, low capital cost and high nickel and cobalt recoveries. The dissolution process is coupled to selective thermal hydrolysis of iron and aluminum.
Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) The process uses sulphuric acid in high temperature, highpressure autoclave vessels to leach nickel and cobalt from lowgrade lateritic nickel ore. The diagram below illustrates the Coral Bay HPAL process, through which limonite .

It remains the most popular option for large scale developments based on saprolite ores and accounts for a significant amount of nickel production from laterite sources. High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) remains the process of choice for treating limonite ores, especially for large scale developments.

Laterite ores typically contain less than 2% nickel and consist of finely disseminated minerals, which are used to classify the ore into several key zones based on their degree of geological weathering and associated depth below ground level. Laterite resources commonly contain large quantities of ironrich minerals, typically referred to as
This process can produce any nickel content in any nickel iron nickel grade ore, iron reduction rate control technology is in the stage of rotary kiln to achieve (nickel all reduced to metal and iron partially reduced into metal and low oxide), this is the biggest feature of this process, but also its vitality the reason, but because of the ...
The DNi Process is also able to process different types of laterite ores (from limonitic to saprolitic ores) which is an important feature for future nickel production. KW Sustainable development KW .
The segregation process as applied to nickel laterite ores involves the formation of gaseous nickel and iron chlorides which are subsequently reduced to form ferronickel on the surface of a solid carbon reductant. A fundamental study of the process has been carried out .
